Tyler Shields
"Lips are the fingerprint of love"
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Shields began his career in the early 2000s and quickly emerged as one of the defining visual voices of his generation. Operating at the intersection of cinema, fashion, and performance, his work is both celebrated, debated, and often fiercely discussed. His work pushes at the edges of glamour and spectacle, urging viewers to question what lies behind the idea of beauty and the culture that sustains it.
Among his recurring motifs, lips hold a unique significance. "Lips are the fingerprint of love", Shields notes, a symbol that threads through his practice as an emblem of desire, intimacy, tension, and the unspoken narratives that shape human connection.
Shields’ practice is distinguished by its narrative force, emotional intensity, and unflinching engagement with reality. His images explore vulnerability, spectacle, and the psychology of the image, drawing on historical events and cultural mythologies to create works that feel both timeless and unmistakably present. Throughout his career, he has often been described as “the Andy Warhol of his generation,” a testament to his ability to expose the emotional truths and underlying tensions that define contemporary experience.
Throughout his career, Tyler Shields has exhibited across major cultural centres, art fairs, and auction platforms in London, Los Angeles, Moscow, Miami Beach, Zurich, St. Moritz, and Oslo. Notably, he is recognised as the youngest and only living photographer to have presented two solo exhibitions at Sotheby’s.
